Coach Benton is currently the Head Coach at the University of Saint Mary (KS) for their Men's and Women's Cross Country & Track programs. He has served on the coaching staff for 9 years, 8 of which he has served as head.
During Coach Benton’s time as the Head Cross Country and Track and field Coach the Spires have accumulated an extensive list of awards. This includes 8 athletes crowned as National Champions, 40+ All Americans, 18 Conference Championship Teams (Men’s XC – 13,14,15,16,17,18,19, 20 – Womens XC – 14,17,18, 20 – Men’s Indoor Track – 18,19, 20 – Men’s Outdoor Track – 19, 21 – Women’s Outdoor track - 21). The Spires have also had 12 program finishes inside the top 10 in the nation. These include a 2015 National Runner up in Men’s Cross Country, a third place USATFCCCA Program of the year finish in the 2018-19 School year, and a First place ranking for USTFCCCA program of the year going into the 2020 Outdoor track and Field Season. Most recently in the 2020-21 Season the Men’s Cross Country and Track and Field teams won the NAIA program of the year awarded by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. They earned this award by being the only team in the NAIA to finish in the Top 10 in all 3 National Championships (XC, ITF, OTF).
Benton is specifically knowledgeable in the areas of Nutrition and Strength and Conditioning for his athletes. Benton is a Level 1 USATF Certified Coach, NCCAP personal training certified. He was an NAIA National Marathon qualifier, holds the Marathon school record at this Alma Mater (Friends University) and is a six-time Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference All Conference performer.
